Harwood Staff Blog Update- May 4, 2023

Team-

Harwood Hacks

When participants arrive at the room, have a table of art materials available.

As they enter, ask participants to create something from the art materials that symbolizes how they feel right now or how they are doing since you last met. In the check-in round, invite them to share their pieces and put them in the center of the circle. They may pass on doing the art piece, sharing about it or putting their piece in the circle.

Hello From the Health Office!

Hopefully the warmer weather has inspired you to get outside! We are seeing sunburns, scrapes, and random rashes. We’d like to share these tips from the American Academy of Dermatology for preventing poisonous plant rashes.

TA update

Well…Spirit Week is just around the corner!

Also…our second administration of the Student Self Evaluation of DESSA is coming up.

What does this mean for advisory?

DESSA

We recognized that we did not provide some background work about DESSA before asking students to complete their self assessment and we didn’t provide a follow up activity to help to understand what this data means to students and to us as educators. So we will be spending three TA blocks over the course of May for a more in-depth process for our students. More information to come.

Spirit Week

Class Meetings Tomorrow during TA

  • 9th Grade: Auditorium

  • 10th Grade: Cafeteria

  • 11th Grade: Library

  • 12th Grade: Cafe

Purpose will be to review the Spirit Week Slideshow to get the group psyched and to begin to develop the teams for Mural, Wellness Board and Music Video

From here it is the mad dash to the Spirit Week deadlines!

You probably knew that May 1 was the date by which seniors have to accept an offer of admission to college BUT, did you know…

  • At this time last year, more than 10% of the senior class admitted that they were unsure of their next steps.

  • To avoid unwanted attention, many students may say they have a plan for after graduation when they really don’t have a plan.  Examples may include a “gap year” with few specifics, a vague reference to a job or enrollment in a community college without any idea of the classes they are interested in taking.

What can you do?

  • Talk about it!  “Lots of students have plans for what they will do after graduation and many students don’t yet have a plan.  Graduating is exciting but it is also filled with unknowns for lots of people.  Access the supports here at Harwood!  Talk with Rachael and Ellen Berrings about an internship or job shadow.  Participate in the summer job fair and come with a resume!  Talk to Rachael, Maggie and Randy about how to enroll in a class at the community or technical college- many students can do this FOR FREE!”

Faculty Nominated Scholarships for Seniors - More information coming SOON

It’s just about that time of year where y’all nominate seniors for a few different scholarships and awards that will be given at the Senior Awards Night on June 8th.

We’re putting the final touches on the google form, and will send it out by the end of this week or early next week. Keep an eye out for it in your inbox.
