Harwood Staff Blog Update - May 11, 2023

Team -

Harwood Hacks

What brings joy in your life right now?

Team -

HUEA building representatives, Meg and Laurie have started their regular meetings again.

Last year we met weekly and bi-weekly at times as a mechanism for feedback and problem solving.

We are eager to continue our strong communication and partnership and thus wanted to ensure everyone knows who the building representatives are:

  • Lynda Cummings

  • Jon Potts

  • Liz Hepp

  • Yvette Boucher-Denning

and encourage staff, as needed, to reach out if there are questions, concerns or feedback.

Meg and Laurie’s door is always open so you are welcome to drop by and connect.  And, building representatives can also surface feedback et al. during our regular meetings.

With gratitude and in partnership,

Duane, Laurie and Meg

Hello From the Health Office!

A couple of reminders…

  • Our mugs are gone again. When students appear in class with tea, please remind them to bring the mugs back.

  • Please send kids with passes or at least email us. We are sending kids back to class when they show up empty handed.

  • Thank you for all the great collaboration we have been getting about supporting students in their learning.

Previously we shared that allergies are hitting our kids hard this spring. It can be dangerous for kids with asthma. If you would like to know a little more about the signs of this serious condition, please click here.

TA update

Next Week we have a lot on our plate! Hold on and hang in there!

Monday: All TA Groups will take the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). Melody will be distributing the materials for all of the TA groups. Every school in Vermont participates in this survey and the information is a helpful guide for us to consider how best to support student wellbeing.

Tuesday: The Spring administration of the Student Self Report for DESSA. Today you all conducted a lead in activity. We are working to provide context and purpose for students as they complete this self assessment. During the week of May 30th we will be conducting a debrief activity with students. This will be an opportunity to review the summary data for students in their grade and make meaning of it.

The Next Two weeks: Preparing for and participating in Spirit Week!!!

Important Reminder: Sign up for Carnival Day Events will be during TA on Friday, 5/19. Please be sure to wait for the announcement to start signing students up for events. Students can sign up for only one Carnival Day Activity.

The ongoing work for video, mural and wellness boards will be occurring next week. Remember the mural cannot be started until Monday of Spirit Week. You can be drafting a design and planning for elements all next week, though.

Most importantly…this is about inclusion, fun and spirit. Let’s come together as a community!

This is a very busy time of year. Thank you all for supporting our students!

ELOs are a little wonky during spirit week, so I’m including some info here and will also be sending emails to remind everyone about some specific actions.

During Spirit Week (5/22-5/26)...

And then there’s Wednesday with five blocks/ELOs spread throughout the day (& Battle of the Bands & Iron Chef)… These ELO sessions are all now created in Adaptive Scheduler.

In the Middle School

ELO 1 - MS core teacher prep; all shared staff offering MS options

Core 1-4 - in the afternoon

The SEL task force is excited to announce that we are providing free professional development with a brand new pilot series for Responsive Classroom for High School (9th-12th) educators. Many of our K-8 teachers are already trained in Responsive Classroom, and now it is our turn to learn common language, strategies, and skills that honor the developmental and social needs of adolescents in order to help us effectively manage our classrooms and create supportive communities. We have heard you (through the HUEA survey and other feedback) that we need more professional development around SEL. Here is an amazing opportunity!

When?

During Inservice on Wednesday June 21st and Thursday June 22nd

Why?

  • Gain valuable insights into adolescent development, including how to foster a sense of belonging, significance, and fun in your classroom.

  • Learn strategies for effective teacher language, responsive advisory meetings, brain breaks, interactive modeling, and active and interactive learning.

  • Learn how to respond effectively to misbehavior in the classroom and create a positive learning environment that supports student success.

  • Gain practical tools and techniques that you can implement immediately in your classrooms to enhance student engagement and achievement.

  • Get to know teachers from other disciplines around the school and help us strengthen our own school community

  • Earn Professional Development Hours (16 hours)

  • Chelsea will bring you snacks! (And you get to hang out with her and other awesome people!)
