Harwood Staff Blog Update- December 1, 2022

Hello Harwood,

We strive to create a school that incorporates student voice, action and connection into all aspects of our school community.   The use of the DESSA self report data assists us with the  allocation of resources, and educational/TA programming to strengthen areas of challenges and celebrate areas of success as it pertains to creating this student centered community.    Thanks to the team and individuals who have placed energy and planning into the use of this valuable tool.   Although November is coming to a close and our belonging calendar focus turns to diversity and cultural celebrations, the use of the DESSA and our community focus will continue for the rest of the school year.

With ongoing gratitude and partnership,

Melody, Duane and Student Support Collective

Appreciations

Liz Hepp

Brave Liz took on the understanding and organization of the year old problem of where HUMS students go on Wednesdays. It continues to be a formidable task - thank you!

Department Heads

For your willingness to push on each other, listen deeply and consider how to most effectively support our students towards being prepared for life after High School

Tara Kelley

You have all heard of the masked singer, well Tara is the masked SEAMSTRESS who sewed the phenomenal cape for our Student Plaid, Owen Duffy, and all of the Student Plaids to come!  Tara took the idea of having a Student Plaid (brought up by students) and ran with it . . . organizing the award behind the scenes and designing a cape that would make Martha Stewart hang her head in defeat!  And then, humble as she is, Tara did not want to be recognized at the assembly, so we have to embarrass her here in the blog.  Thank you Ms. Kelley! (Teacher Plaid 2023, perhaps?)

Safe - seen, heard, respected & understood:

Student Support Collective Update

Please check out the Slide Show to review what we discussed at the Staff meeting this week, in TA Groups -  related to the DESSA. Also - check in with your lead TA with any questions about the meeting.

**Don’t forget to use the DESSA Activity Resource Bank, leave questions on the Q&A Doc and of course, please share your FEEDBACK

Awesome Opportunity for our MIDDLE SCHOOLERS: Please see this LINK for information about our role in participating in the DESSA Self-Report national research study to norm and help create a valid and reliable self-report measure for 6th-8th graders.

  • The week before break, our middle school students will be able to complete a self-report, and go through a similar experience as the high schoolers, but their data will be used in the nationwide norming for the self-report measure

  • Maybe even cooler, after break, additional middle school students will have an opportunity to participate in an interview to provide qualitative data and feedback to best ensure the survey is meeting the needs of middle schoolers nationwide, and that the survey is providing data that will allow educators to have the best information to most optimally respond to support middle school students.

Daily Support Team: Detentions Resume December 6th and 7th

Please know the following information was shared in the community newsletter before Thanksgiving break:

In an effort to continue to assess and refine our systems, we have updated our procedures to support students including progressive responses to continuation of behaviors, opportunity for restorative and community service, and follow up to teach skills and strategies to change behavior.

For Behaviors, Class Cuts, or 3+ tardies in a week, expect the following procedures:

  1. Class cuts, 3+ tardies in one week; behavior: First violation = After School Detention

    1. Review why and sign acknowledgement of expectations

    2. Follow up by student support 1:1 to review behavior and discuss strategies

  2. Continuation of Behavior/Cuts/Tardies: Second Violation = 2nd After School Detention

  3. Continuation of Behaviors: Third Violation = Half Day In School Suspension

    1. Focus - Community Service

  4. Continuation of Behaviors: Fourth Violation = Full Day In-School Suspension

    1. Focus: Educational Component and Project

    2. Community Service

  5. Continuation of Behaviors: Fifth Violation = Administrative Meeting and Plan of Action

Health Office Survey

We are asking staff to complete this survey (linked above) to:

  1. Inform us of any medical certifications (EMT, CPR), and if you would be willing and able to help in an emergency.

  2. Assess who would be interested in a low-cost CPR/First Aid class.

Thank you for all that you do!

A message from students in Harwood Union High School’s Harkness Leadership Class.

This year we will be offering a Socrates Cafe.  This event has been a tradition at Harwood since 2010 that was sadly interrupted by the pandemic. A Socrates Cafe brings the community together as we work to answer a timely and timeless question. It allows us to gain new perspectives while meeting people throughout the area who we may not know and build connections and relationships through the thoughtful conversation brought out in this event.

We are incredibly excited to bring back the event this year. The driving question we will be discussing is what does it mean to forgive? This idea does not have one answer. Hearing new perspectives will deepen our own ideas and beliefs regarding forgiveness.

Midpoint of

Quarter 2!

Monday 12/5 is the midpoint of quarter 2.

This is an informal check-point for students, and JumpRope progress reports will be emailed to students and families on Tuesday afternoon

Please make sure that student scores in JumpRope are as up-to-date as possible so that students get an accurate portrayal of how they are doing. Thanks!

December Staff Festivities

We want to bring some winter cheer to Harwood during the month of December! April’s organizing a Secret Snow Person during the week of December 12th - 16th and a Cookie/Treat Exchange on December 21st.

How it works:

If you want to participate in the Secret Snow Person:

- There will be a basket with April in the front office. On Dec. 5, 6, 7 or 8, come to the office to put your name in the basket. On December 9th, come back to the office to pick a name out of the basket. The following week (12th - 16th), you'll put a little gift in that person's mailbox everyday (can be something homemade or bought. Please keep it to $5 or less). On the last day, you will reveal your identity! (Please don't put your name in the basket unless you plan on also picking a name).

If you want to participate in the Cookie/Treat Exchange:

There will be a sign up sheet in the office on Dec. 19th and 20th. On December 21st, bring in 3 dozen cookies or treats - of the same kind. Depending on how many people participate, you will leave with 3 dozen mixed cookies and treats. For example, if 10 people participate, you'll leave with 3 dozen of those mixed 10 kinds of treats!
