Harwood Staff Blog, August 4, 2020

“ Whatever it is, coronavirus has made the mighty kneel and brought the world to a halt like nothing else could. Our minds are still racing back and forth, longing for a return to “normality”, trying to stitch our future to our past and refusing to acknowledge the rupture. But the rupture exists. And in the midst of this terrible despair, it offers us a chance to rethink the doomsday machine we have built for ourselves. Nothing could be worse than a return to normality.
Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next.
We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it. “ - Arundvati Roy

HU Team;

During our Building based team meeting last week we felt overwhelming energy and confidence in the fact that no matter what lies ahead we’ve got this together.

Although there is much up in the air our Department heads, Building based team, Scheduling team, some dwarfs from moria, a few woodland elves, rohan riders, gondor viragos, and a few random hobbits who happen to have a ring that glows (add heroic LOTR music here) are continuing with their readiness for a very unique school opening this fall.  Please find the current plan for our Master School Schedule and an opportunity to share questions and needs.

We also recognize that there is much work happening by each of you to adjust your curriculum, grow your online skill set and ready yourself generally speaking to the unique reality of what teaching and learning will look like this year.

Your collective energy and efforts are the reason we’ll make this happen for our students.

In gratitude and in partnership,
Meg,  Laurie, Duane

Decision to come soon?
The Agency of Education issued a statement indicating that “School boards will have the authority to decide which of these instructional dispositions will be implemented in their schools.  The HUUSD has indicated that their final decision (if this is the path they choose on 8/5) will be made by 8/12. More information soon.

Again, the Racial Equity group would like to extend an invitation to all interested in participating - the next meeting on August 5th at 9 a.m.

Self care - ensuring we are laughing instead of crying
As we continue to charter this ride it’s in the best interest of our health to ensure we are laughing - to that end - you might enjoy this brief piece

Sign in/mask reminder

There is a sign in sheet in the vestibule of the front entrance to the school . If you come into the building, please SIGN IN. If, for any reason, there’s an issue (i.e., anyone coming in tests positive or believes they have come into contact with someone who has), that allows us to know who else we should be contacting.
Don't forget to wear your mask for the protection of yourself and others:)

Construction work FYI
*Crossett Hill Rd. will be closed August 18 through October 13, 2020

*Please note that the Moretown Village will experience considerable wait time and changes in traffic patterns over the next two to three months. It is not uncommon to experience 15 to 20 minute delays on RTE 100B either coming to or leaving Harwood.
side note: On a recent perfect summer day, Duane indicated that he was held up in traffic for most of the day... the reason he gave for missing our daily pethoria (good scrabble word) of meetings.....mmmm
