Hello from the Health Office!

  • Please remember to run all field trips through the health office to ensure you have all the medical information you need to safely remove our students from the building. As always, please use the huhs-nurses@huusd.org email address for official communication.

  • The word on the street is the nurses have food and we really don’t. Please encourage our students to eat breakfast and lunch. The snacks we have in the health office are for medical purposes and are usually student specific.

  • Tuesday, 3/28/2023 was Diabetes Alert Day. Follow the link to know your risks and learn more about this serious disease.

TA update

Focus for April: Student Led conferences!!!

During our TA focused staff meeting this week your lead TA shared the planning documents for the Spring Student Led conferences. The preparation documents for each grade have unique characteristics so it is important to refer to your TA slideshow for the resources connected to your grade.

We will NOT be using Canyon Creek. As a result each teacher will need to reach out to families in order to schedule the conferences. To support this process I drafted a letter for parent/guardians that you can choose to copy and use or feel free to adapt to your needs. Embedded in this letter is a google doc sign up document if you would like to use this method for scheduling with families.

Quarter 3

comes to an end

It’s here! The end of Quarter 3!

This Friday, March 31st, is not only the last day of March, but also the end of Quarter 3. What this means for both the high school and middle school:

  • JumpRope progress reports will be emailed to families next Friday, April 7.

  • Teachers should have scores as up-to-date as possible in JumpRope by the end of the day next Thursday.

  • Please include a comment for each student who is not currently successfully completing a course - what should they focus on in the last quarter to end the year successfully?

  • Now is a great time to check your courses’ alignment to the Harwood Assessment Plan (this is high school only, but is also a good guideline for middle school courses). Full-year courses should be on track for

    • 4-8 different performance indicators assessed (not including Self Direction)

    • All performance indicators summatively assessed at least three times by the end of the year

    • 6-12 summative assessments for the course by the end of the year

It could also be a good time to fill out or check in on a table for tracking summative assessments and performance indicators. The example below was included in the syllabus template, and it will be helpful to have this filled out for every course as we continue our horizontal and vertical curriculum work.

We have had a busy week with Harkness work at Harwood. Kathy Cadwell penned the following article to highlight the efforts of Harwood faculty and student leaders to work with teachers and students from other schools.

Harwood Harkness Teachers and Students Share Their Work Throughout Vermont.pdf

Dear HUUSD Staff,

It is often said that March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb or vice versa.  I have never heard of the lion being mid-month, but wow!  It seems we got this winter’s lion’s share of the snow right in the middle.  Shoveling out, I had the chance to think about the topic of Personal Responsibility, whether I wanted to or not. It was a perfect time to teach my kids how to shovel, to help take care of the things that are ours.  LIttle pieces of this are so important and grow as they do.

Take a minute to think about the things your students are responsible for: their chromebook, their tool kits, their schedule and time management, classroom jobs.  Some are individual and some are collective, all are important.  Starting small and building helps students be careful and reliable, building skills that will help with future successes.  Practice with personal responsibility will help them achieve the greatness they are all capable of.  Practice doesn’t make perfection though, it makes growth.  Mistakes will happen, they are kids after all, snow will be moved to the middle of the driveway instead of the sides. These are learning opportunities for us all, coaching toward perseverance and being responsible for themselves and their community.

Here are some resources for your work in this area.  Teaching and coaching students to be accountable and have integrity is hard work.  Thanks for doing it!

  • What should you do if you stain a sweater that you borrowed from a friend?

  • You forgot to shut the gate.  The dog gets out.  What should you do?

Master Scheduling update

Thank you to everyone who helped complete the student request process.  An extra shout out to Erin, Maggie, and Randy and the middle school teams for their flexibility in working around snow days and field trips to make it happen by the deadline!

This work allows us to start the teaching assignment and building process about 3 weeks ahead of last year's timing!
