Harwood Hacks

Choosing from a selection: Laminate a bunch of photos and have students choose the one

they like the best and have them explain why. Or... have a basket full of talking pieces,

content-related objects, stuffed animals, or nicknacks. Have a student choose the one they

connect to and share why they chose it. Collect old date books, magazines, and calendars and

have students cut out photos for check-ins.

Greetings!

Have any extra mugs? In an effort to conserve cups, we are collecting mugs for tea in the health office.

Here is some information about the winter blues as we are at the mid-point between solstices (winter and spring). This article lists out some health ways to keep your body and mind healthy this time of year.

Pickle soup! What!?! Yes, Zupa Ogórkowa (Polish creamy pickle soup). I made this recipe for my family, it was thumbs up all around. If you are a pickle fan, I highly recommend. It’s best if made with good quality pickles.

TA update

Please note an addition to TA programming for next week!!!!!

TA this week will have some activities devoted to PS I Love You week that has been organized by OVX and the YEWS. This will require some flexibility on our part as some of the items needed are on order and will arrive sometime soon! We will be sending an email out to every TA teacher once we know specific dates and information for additional activities at least one day in advance.

On Monday we are asking every TA to watch this video. Please follow up with your group about their response to the video and the idea of the PS I Love You campaign.

Registration continues for grades 9 and 10 in TA. See your slideshow for specific resources and information for next week. Grade 11 students are meeting individually with their school counselor. If you have 11th graders, be sure to check in with your students to see how they are doing.

Welcome to Sue Duprat who will be the interim Athletic Director for the remainder of this school year. Sue was Chris’ predecessor and was here from 2003 - 2017.

She says, As always, the door is always open, there will always be candy available, and Fridays are Vitamin D days - Vitamin Donuts…”

“While not excited to be unretired, I'm really thrilled to be back to the only place, and the only job, that would make me unretire myself.”

Also welcome to Quintin Nunn who is our new daytime custodian! We’re so grateful to have you, Quintin!

Suicide Prevention Awareness/PS I Love You Week

As a reminder, Suicide Prevention Week (PS I Love You Week) starts Monday 02/06/2023 to 02/10/2023. This is put on by the Our Voices Exposed (OVX) and Youth Enriching Wellness (YEWS) Clubs that we both advise. We will be having some events throughout the week which will be happening during some TA days and during lunches. As well a video and quick presentation at assembly. The color for this week most importantly on Friday is for as many people as possible to wear purple in support of Suicide Prevention Week and PS I Love You week.

Students brought the idea of having some additional wellness ELO options for that week. The students were wondering if all staff would consider providing one or two wellness ELO options for the week, to help provide support during the week to our students. Please let us know if you have any questions in regards to this.

See full email sent this week with some wellness options for ELO’s for the week. If you are providing a wellness ELO,  please add a note in any of your ELO blocks in the adaptive scheduler.

Any questions please reach out to Skylar Bradley or Jen Dreimiller. Thank you all again for the support!!

Rwanda Travel Study Donations

Do you have any extra fabric, diverse children's books, or unused bars of soap?  Harwood’s Rwanda Travel Study program is going to Rwanda for three weeks this February, and we want to bring your extra goods!

While we are in Rwanda, our students practice ethnography by interviewing community members who work with local nonprofits. In return, we bring supplies that our partner organizations have requested. This year, A Friend Indeed is looking for fabric, unused bars of soap, and children's books. A Friend Indeed works to improve living conditions for single mothers, who are typically stigmatized in Rwandan society. One of their programs trains mothers to earn money by sewing clothing. Quilting cotton in increments of 1+ yards is preferred for clothing, and flannel can be used for menstrual pads.

Please drop off diverse children’s books to Rachael Potts, unused bars of soap can be dropped off in the box in the main lobby, and please bring fabric to any of our chaperones by FRIDAY, 2/10.

Thank you in advance!

Tedin, Tara, Rachael, Paul, and Steve

Reminder that lunch on Friday (inservice day) will be a POT LUCK. Here is the sign up sheet: Potluck Sign Up for February 3rd

Hello again from the HUUSD Social Emotional Learning Task Force.

This January we are focusing on the theme of Relationship Skills.  Last month we learned a bit about social awareness, this month we are learning about the action of interacting.  Humans need to know how to communicate clearly and how to resolve conflicts in order to make and maintain relationships.  Interacting, having reciprocity, giving one’s opinion respectfully and working as part of a group are all skills students use everyday.  Here are a couple ideas about how to expand your practice this month:

  • Quote(s) to talk more about:

    • THE MOST BASIC OF ALL HUMAN NEEDS IS THE NEED TO UNDERSTAND AND BE UNDERSTOOD. THE BEST WAY TO UNDERSTAND PEOPLE IS TO LISTEN TO THEM. -Ralph G. Nichols

    • “Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.” — Anais Nin

    • “A friend may be waiting behind a stranger’s face.”  — Maya Angelou

    • “Trust is the glue of life. It's the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It's the foundational principle that holds all relationships.” – Stephen Covey

We hope that some of these may be helpful and assist students in growing in their Relationship Skills.  We appreciate all that you do to support this work!

Best,

The SELTF
