Friendly reminders

  • Students should ONLY be entering through the front lobby or south entrance - please remind them as needed.

  • If students leave before the end of the day at 3:20 (even 5 minutes early) - they need to check out in the front office.

  • Please keep your students in class till the final bell rings at the end of the day. Students let out early can create safety issues

DESSA Middle School Update: Coming in January, our Harwood 7th and 8th graders will be participating in the Aperture DESSA research study, completing a self-report form and engaging in follow up interviews to support the creation of the self-assessment for our middle school aged youth across the nation. These ratings will allow Aperture Research group to select the items that best indicate positive outcomes for students. Their involvement will give students a voice and impact on a national assessment to support students and their well-being. It will also help educators and staff as they promote and support growth in their students’ social and emotional skills.

A True Partnership: After School Detentions - Thank you to you all for partnering with us in both holding students accountable, while also meeting and collaborating with us to develop and provide student learning opportunities, restorative conversations, and working together to best support students in growing and moving forward in positive ways. We will continue to monitor and refine our system and look forward to our continued partnership in the new year!

Please continue to email home when a situation arises that leads to a detention request. The Daily Support Team will continue to send out emails and communicate around detentions related to behaviors following the process below:

Detention Process and Timeline:

  1. The reports are run for the previous week's tardies and discipline issues on Mondays

  2. We research and cross reference to ensure clarity and identify discrepancies

  3. Reports are shared with athletic director by Wednesday mornings

  4. Athletic director reviews for student-athlete conflicts, and also prepares communication from athletics to coaches and players/caregivers

  5. Athletic director confirms by Thursday afternoon

  6. Emails sent out to students/caregivers by Friday morning

Appreciation!

To all of you for spreading light with your students this week!

Chelsea Turley for adding light to the bulletin board to surround our positive messages.

In the New Year:

Our focus in the week back from break will be on reconnecting and academic advising and advocacy. With two weeks left in the semester, it is important to be conducting individual student check ins to make sure students are on track.

Coming VERY soon in the new year…course registration for the 2023-2024 academic year!

We’re excited to welcome Casie Grossman as a new Special Educator to Harwood this week. She will be in room 216 in the LRC and her ext. is 8142.

From Casie: I’m excited to join the team at Harwood! It’s great to be back home in the Green Mountains after teaching and learning abroad the past few years. Prior to this, I taught middle and high school social studies in Vermont. Looking forward to meeting you all!

EV Charger

Please be mindful that many people need to use the charging stations at Harwood.  Please limit your time so others have access to the system.  Thank you!

If you are in a classroom with vinyl floor during the last block of the day please put up the chairs - thank you!

Hello again from the HUUSD Social Emotional Learning Task Force.

This December we are focusing on the theme of Social Awareness.  Understanding the emotions of others and connecting in an empathic way can have life-long impacts.  Taking on the perspective of others is extremely important in our social interactions, and truly understanding each other as humans. Here are a couple ideas about how to expand your practice this month:

We hope that some of these may be helpful and assist students in growing in their Social Awareness.  We appreciate all that you do to support this work!

Best,

The SELTF
