Health Office Updates

We are updating PowerSchool with student health concerns (asthma, life-threatening allergies, seizure disorder, and diabetes). It will be complete by Monday (9/12). It is found under the caduceus symbol next to the students name. Please include a copy of this information in your sub folder. For those students with high risk health concerns, we will email teachers individually.

Staff Meeting Calendar

ELO

Next week is our first full 5-day week - bring on some consistency! Here’s what a normal week will look like for ELO:

  • By Sunday night… make sure you have at least 5 students pre-booked to any course blocks you have on Monday (ELO M) or Tuesday (ELO T1 & T2)

  • In TA Monday morning… students book themselves for ELO M, T1, and T2, and TAs ensure that all of their TA students are booked for all three blocks

  • By Wednesday night… make sure you have at least 5 students pre-booked to any course blocks you have on Thursday (ELO Th) or Friday (ELO F1 &F2)

  • In TA Thursday morning… students book themselves for ELO Th, F1, and F2, and TAs ensure that all their TA students are booked for all three blocks

One FAQ has been How far out in the future can teachers book students? If you need to book students into future weeks, please don’t go further than two weeks out.

Unexcused absences and course completion

How many unexcused absences automatically mean that a student cannot successfully complete a course?

This question has come up as teachers finalize their syllabi for the year (due 9/10!), and it is complicated to answer in a proficiency system, where part of our philosophy is that all students must be challenged, believed in, and supported to reach common, high expectations. We want our students’ course scores to be a reflection of their knowledge and skills, not their attendance or behavior. Conversely, if a student receives an incomplete for a course, it should reflect insufficient skill development, rather than simply not meeting a specific attendance requirement.

Why is it important for a student to be in class? There are so many reasons! If a student has many unexcused absences, it undoubtedly affects their learning and practicing of skills, as well as their ability to turn quality assessments in by the due date or deadline. This, in turn, should affect their course score as a reflection of their skill development.

In this year’s syllabus template, the following was included: Four or more unexcused absences in the course could result in an “incomplete” for the learning experience. This is intended for a full-year course - please do not change this wording. This is intentionally vague - it is important for students to recognize the connection between being present in class, and learning and practicing the knowledge and skills of the course. However, we are not going to use a set number of unexcused absences to automatically result in an incomplete for a course.*

*None of this means that unexcused absences aren’t followed up on in many other ways. We want to support all our students in being here at school, being safe, and doing their best learning.

College & Training Fair

On Monday, September 19th, we will host a College and Training Fair.  All students in grades 9 through 12 will have the opportunity to explore and interact with admissions representatives from 45 colleges and universities from around the country.  There will also be representatives from Americorps, Job Corps, the Advanced Welding Institute and the Central Vermont Medical Center to talk about alternate training opportunities.  Activities to prepare and engage students with the fair will be provided in Teacher Advisory (TA) throughout the week leading up to the event.

Here is the modified schedule for the day. The only changes to a typical gold-day schedule are

  1. Block 1 is longer to accommodate classes visiting the fair in grade-level groups

  2. Block 2 is shorter so that Block 3/lunch start at the usual time

  3. ELO M will meet in full Block 2 classes (grades 9-12 only) to make up time lost earlier in the day

Middle School will run on the usual bell schedule with no changes at all.

Reminders

The last day to add or drop courses for students will be Friday, September 9th.  Thank you to all of the faculty for your patience and flexibility as we adjust student schedules.

The School Counseling Department is in the process of updating course rosters to accurately reflect students’ attendance.  Please fill out this form to indicate if there are discrepancies in your course rosters versus the actual students attending your class.

Announcements

Have a TA announcement please email Liz Hepp - lhepp@huusd.org

Harwood Rowland Fellows & Harwood Administration are seeking interested faculty to attend the 11th Annual Rowland Conference at the UVM Davis Center on Wednesday, October 26th. The theme of the conference is "All Students Thriving: Rethinking School & Community."Dr. Gholdy Muhammad as this year’s keynote speaker. Dr. Muhammad’s book Cultivating Genius is a seminal work that reminds us of the transformative power of literacy. With Vermont’s recent passage of Act 28, “An act relating to improving prekindergarten through grade 12 literacy within the State,” and Act 1, “An act relating to ethnic and social equity studies standards for public schools,” Dr. Muhammad’s work is more relevant than ever for Vermont educators. Please see the included brochure for more information including workshop descriptions.

We would hope that any interested attendees would be willing to participate in an afterschool debrief sometime within a week following the conference (at a time that works for most or all who attend).

If you are interested, please fill out this Google Form by WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 14TH and let us know if you have attended previously and if you would be willing to attend an afterschool gathering.

Please know that those who have not attended previously will have priority.

Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you!

Tara Cariano '18, Ellen Berrings '13, and Sarah Ibson '13

A reminder to please complete all tasks for the start of the year!

Start of Year Checklist

  • PLEASE NOTE - after our Department Head meeting yesterday morning it became clear that more time was needed for Emergency sub plans  and that 3 days was not necessary at this timeEmergency sub plans are now due by 10/03.  In the meantime Departments will work together to provide support if needed or a study hall will be held in an emergent situation.

  • Mandatory Trainings are due by December 15th.

Suggestion Box

Sometimes the little things we need have the biggest impact on our mindset.  So, while there is much outside our locus of control we will do our best to address that which we can!

PLEASE NOTE:  In response to an ask from our Suggestion box.  We recognize that some of our clocks are not reporting the right time.  Given our facilities staff crisis please take inaccurate clocks down for now until we have the staff to support.
