    • Rising 7th and 9th grade will have a Step Up Day.

Detention Update

Process for Missing Students *A missing student is any student who is not in your classroom (for classes after TA) and does not have a pre-entered code to explain their absence.

  1. Staff emails HU Student Support if they have a missing student (if you do not have PowerSchool access for log entries for this student, please indicate so in this initial email)

  2. Yvette checks attendance and responds if students is AE or UX

  3. If UX you can expect that - Student Support is searching the building to locate the student

  4. If UX staff should log a detention & communicate home and to students accordingly

Please note: Student Support will adjust detention according to any changes that are needed after potential logs are made by staff.

FYI:

  • UX- unexcused absence

  • UXP- parental validated unexcused absence (entered on response form by parent but still falls into the unexcused category) (example- leaving a day early for family vacation)

Friendly reminder re: expectations for:

Unexcused Extended Late for Class

(more than 10 min late)

  • 1X - Student logged for missed class- Student serves 1 after school detention

  • (there may be exceptions as sometimes misses are justified)

  • Student Support will be notified no later than Monday afternoon with a list for after school detention)  Information to be emailed to family.  We will use the UX attendance indicator to both identify and track this issue.

  • Staff must indicate (log entry) if a detention is to be served or another means will be carried about to address the situation.

Class Miss (student does not attend class)

  • 1X - Student serves 1 after school detention

  • (there may be exceptions as sometimes misses are justified)

  • Student Support will be notified no later than Monday afternoon with list for after school detention)  Letter to be emailed to family

  • Staff must indicate (log entry) if a detention is to be served or another means will be carried about to address the situation.

TA update

Next TA staff meeting is Tuesday April 12th

The theme for April is Future Planning. April is also Financial Literacy Month

With the start of the fourth quarter it is time to begin preparing for the May End of Year Reflections (EOYR). You will be reviewing this at your meeting on Tuesday.

Connection Ideas:

Thank you to Paul Kramer (and Kate and her Journalism students) for the excellent idea of bringing the Harwood Journalism podcasts to the TA experience. I am toying with the idea of creating a trivia contest based on the content of Harwood’s Hidden History. I will send an email to get a sense of interest from all of you!

Genevieve introduced the NY Times puzzles and games as a great group activity in her TA. We used it in our TA today and it was a fun and easy brain energizer…everyone wanted to play!

Coming Soon! Student-led live announcements during TA every day. This group is meeting now and will launch very soon!

Please let Ellen know if you can NOT hear the announcements in your TA space!!!! We will try to problem solve this for you.

Bringing Awareness to Sexual Violence

“Let’s Talk About It” is a student-led Harwood club whose mission is to initiate and maintain sexual respect norms within each of Harwood’s distinctive communities, while seeking to uphold values of respect, conversation, and empathy. In alignment with this mission, we are excited to announce a month of action in support of sexual respect during April, the global Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Throughout the course of this month, various events are taking place to support survivors and seek justice in our community and beyond. These events include:

  • A Day of Action on April 5th. Members of the Harwood community were invited to wear teal - the color of sexual violence prevention - on this day, in order to display support for survivors of sexual violence. This day also included tabling at school lunches with club information, resources, stickers, and pins.

  • A month-long Bra Drive to support “Free the Girls,” an organization that uses donations of bras to create a “world in which previously enslaved women are leading vibrant, successful, integrated lives.” The more bras our community donates, the more survivors this organization is able to support, financially and emotionally. The bra drive will help a woman in the developing world by supplying inventory for her business; selling bras on the second-hand market! The more bras our community donates, the more survivors this organization is able to support; financially and emotionally. Community members are invited to donate new or gently used bras during the month of April that are in good condition. They can be any size or style, with or without tags. Donation boxes can be found in the community at Stowe St. Cafe, Red Hen Bakery, & The Green Closet.

  • Consent trainings for middle-school students at HUMS and CBMS, took place in late March and early April during health classes with the goal of normalizing sexual respect.

  • Participated in the All-School Assembly by bringing awareness to the Day of Action, Bra Drive, and interviewing representatives from CIRCLE and MOSAIC, Central Vermont’s local organizations working to end sexual violence.

  • Updated “Stall St Journals,” the flyers staged in all the bathroom stalls of the school. These are providing information about healthy relationships and consent.

If you have any questions, please contact “Let’s Talk About It: Students for Sexual Respect” club advisor and teacher, Tara Cariano at tcariano@huusd.org

Flex Block

(Jess Deane)

Just a quick heads up that I have received approximately 100 Flex Block change requests from students (apparently the grass is always greener!). If students ask you about making a change, please remind them that they can email me, and I will make changes when possible. In the email sent to them, here is what I said:

If you are still interested in switching, you can email me. Please keep the following in mind:

  • Make sure to email me by Friday April 15 - that is the last day that I will accept change requests.

  • Check out the Flex Block description document to see what other choices you would be interested in, keeping in mind that if you did not get your 1st or 2nd choice, it is because it is full.

Thank you for supporting our students in being FLEXIBLE and keeping an open mind!
