Harwood Staff Blog Update - January 27, 2022

Team -

As we continue to improve our attendance system, we are looking at different scenarios to make sure we are keeping all our students safe. In one case last week, a parent reached out to us distraught that their child left school at 10:30 and they had not been contacted.

How did this happen?

The student was not fully booked for ELO and was marked UX from two ELO’s.

Why was this student not flagged as absent?

It seems like this student wasn’t flagged for two reasons:

  1. there were ELOs that they weren’t booked for and

  2. ELOs that they were absent from but nobody raised the concern that they weren’t there by calling the office or flagging HU Student Support.

Consider your implicit bias when answering this question:

  • If this child was one typically present in your class & polite - would you have called down to the office?

  • If this child was one typically skipping class and typically with HU Student Support - would you have called down to the office?

Why is it essential to flag ALL students if they are absent?

It ensures they feel seen and heard and it reiterates that we respect and understand their needs.

It shows them that we care about them being here, and that we notice when they are not.

What is your responsibility for ensuring all students are supervised and accounted for?

  • Take attendance and report any absences to the front desk.and report any absences not already marked as such to the front desk (8169).

  • By Tuesday of each week ensure all of  your TA students have been signed up for every ELO block.

How do our attendance procedures support our work to strengthen the climate and culture of our community?

When people are seen and heard it increases feelings of being respected and understood and in turn it increases a sense of belonging.  This sense of belonging increases engagement in their learning and their desire to respect their peers’ learning and our school community at large.

To be clear - the student who left at 10:30 without permission made a poor choice and needs to be held accountable for that choice.

AND

When students arrive at Harwood each day their safety becomes our responsibility.

Our systems are not perfect YET but our collective effort will move us closer.

Thank you for your partnership and vigilance,

Duane, Laurie and Meg

End of the Year Reflection (EOYR)

There have been many questions about the plan for the May student-led conferences. We want to let you know that we will be following a similar process to the one that was developed last year as a combined faculty. For our new folks, students were asked to reflect on their experience over the course of the year (recognizing all of the challenges it presented us!). This process opens the door to considering positive and negative impacts while also guiding students to consider the skills they developed to rise up and meet the challenges.

In addition, we will be adding a reflection of their goal for the year and a look forward to hopes and dreams for next year.

Next week we will share more specifics on this process. We will have time during our next TA focused staff meeting to review as a group.

Stay tuned!
