Harwood Staff Blog update, September 12, 2021

HU Flight 2122 possibly emerging from the early school year
clouds and turbuance - but keep you seat belts on just in case.

Thank you ALL for your incredible work to start the 21-22’ school year with care, high expectations and a clear focus on fostering strong relationships so all students can feel safe - seen, heard, respected and understood.  As we walk around the building we observe your commitment in both your BIG and small actions.

  • Use of circles during TA
  • Efforts to create a diverse selection of Flex block options and the lift to actually bring them to fruition today
  • Your circulation during class when you prompt, support and answer students questions
  • Focus on ensuring clarity of details for ELO next Wednesday
  • In the consistent use of the awesome weekly TA calendar and slideshows
  • Your quick efforts to learn your student’s names and use them during classes

As we all continue to adjust to our full school schedule with masks we also encourage you to continue to take breaks outside - for your health and our students AND use them to continue to build relationships ;)

With ongoing gratitude!

Meg, Laurie and Duane

Important Information

Staff Handbook To Do:

Thank you all for your patience as we finalized the 21-22’ Staff Handbook.  This document is the first place we should all go when we have a question about procedures or expectations.  Please review and sign off that you have read and understand.

Friendly Reminder to ALL.

If you see a child without a mask - even student athletes at the end of the day please remind them to mask up.  Ensuring our continued safety is a collective effort.

Remember:

  • MASKS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL DURING THE SCHOOL DAY.

  • Masks are required outdoors unless individuals  are 6’  or more distanced.

If students struggle to meet this norm after being reminded by a staff member, we will contact home to collectively consider support.  If staff need to remind students more than two times - families will be contacted and students sent home.

Preparing for Book Club on 9/21 TO DO:

If you haven’t already please grab your “So, you want to talk about Race” book from your mailbox.

Our Staff Book Club meeting will be during our staff meeting on 9/21.  To prepare for our next meeting please read chapter 3 “What if I talk about Race Wrong”.

We are excited for this to be a FULL staff experience.  Friendly reminder to Support Staff to complete time sheets with Shannon so you are compensated for this time.

TA plan for next week

Announcements! Please read new announcements every day!

It is disheartening to hear students (more than I want to imagine) sharing that the announcements are rarely or never read during advisory time. Please add the daily announcements to your morning routine.

Appreciation!

I appreciate the time and dedication you are all putting into the welcome meetings with families. I know this makes for long days. Family connections are incredibly important. Hopefully these meetings have helped to create or maintain positive relationships with our students and families.

Connection Activity of the Week

Offer students a chance to close their eyes and imagine themselves in any

place in the world that they’d like to go to at that moment. Guide them

through a mini- visualization and elicit sensory details in their

imagination : “What does the air feel like?” Have them

open their eyes and share one detail about the place and why they might

want to be there now.

Community/Team builder Activity

Enemy and Defender

Invite everyone to begin moving around in any direction.

  1. After a short time, tell everyone to freeze. Tell everyone to silently identify two people in the room: Person 1 will be their worst enemy, Person 2 will be their defender. They should not give away who they have chosen.

  2. Everyone resumes moving. Their goal is to stay safe by always keeping their defender between them and their enemy.

  3. After a few minutes yell "Freeze! again" Ask how many people met the goal, and ask them to point at their two people.

Advisory Slideshows:

Links to the TA slideshows will always be in the blog. This provides another point of access to ensure that you can locate resources easily. Remember that they are a work in progress and will be mapped out in monthly increments.

ELO & Flex updates

ELO starts Wednesday! Here are some reminders, with new information highlighted. Please read carefully!

  • Every third week, each department will hold full classes for all their courses (this ensures that all students will have some course bookings each week) - This rotation will be pre-booked for you, and is already done for this week - English, World Language, Art, and Connected Learning departments.

  • On other weeks, teachers must book at least 5 students per teacher per class (but you can book up to your full class if wanted; if you can’t identify at least 5 specific students to work with, you are encouraged to book your whole class).

  • All study halls will hold their same regular study hall with the same students - these are pre-booked for you.

  • Each week, pre-booking for courses must happen by Monday 3pm (ex. booking block 3 students to ELO 3).

  • “Open season” booking (booking non-course students or students for other blocks) can occur from Mon 3pm-Tues AM.

  • Students finish booking themselves in TA Tuesday morning (TA teachers double-check - any student who is not fully booked, the TA should complete their booking so that all blocks are filled).

  • ALL students must be booked every block!

Highly recommend for everyone! After pre-booking students, choose “edit session” for each ELO session and update the capacity (I pre-set this to 40 due to some large sections). Lower it to the total number in your class, or a few more than you have booked to allow additional students from your class to opt to see you. Also include a “note” (students will see this) if you are working on something in particular during ELO.

If you’re out on a Wednesday

  • If you know you’re going to be out, please still pre-book students according to guidelines above, and include sub plans for these blocks.

  • If you are unexpectedly out, the students booked to you will remain, and a sub will cover the blocks.

  • This includes if you are hosting a study space, lab, or active option for ELO.

Shared Staff/Middle School

  • Shared staff will hold full middle school classes on Wednesdays during their respective blocks - these classes will not be scheduled through Adaptive Scheduler, and attendance will be taken in PowerSchool.

I will be adding in ELO Wednesday blocks for every Wednesday through the semester very soon… just trying to get through this Wednesday first (so I can learn from any mistakes!).

Flex Block #1 last Friday was (generally) a success! I’m sifting through change request emails, so some rosters may change slightly for Tuesday. Scoring sheets and guidelines to come in the next week or so.

Update from the Health Office

First of all, thank you for welcoming us to Harwood!  Updates:

  1. Emergency Health Plans:  If a student has an allergy, seizure disorder, or asthma (severe), the emergency health plan will be in PowerSchool.  If you click on the caduceus (red symbol next to the student's name), the plan will come up.  Please print these for your sub folders.

  2. If you would like more training about life-threatening allergies and using an epi-pen, please let us know.  If you think your student might be having an allergic reaction, call or radio us.  We have extra epi-pens in our office, and students with anaphylaxis reactions should be carrying their own epi-pens to self-administer.

  3. As of now, it is fine to send students down to the office without calling us first.

  4. We continue to have a low threshold to sending students home with COVID symptoms, and following up with students who are home sick to assess if they need a COVID test before they return.

  5. COVID surveillance testing (asymptomatic) begins on September 20th for both students and staff.  The event will take place in the morning.  Click here to register.  We are finalizing logistics and will communicate as we get closer.

Please feel free to reach out with questions.
