On Thursday, May 29 from 6:00- 7:30 PM students from the Dialogues on Race class  will be hosting a Community Dialogue  open to everyone in the HUUSD. The timely and important question that these students are inviting YOU to consider is the following:

What should students, teachers, and community members do

to acknowledge and confront individual and systemic racism in our

schools and community?

The dialogue  has been planned by and will be facilitated by  students.

End of Year Reflection (EOYR)

This week we had an opportunity to explore similar reflection questions to the ones students will be exploring in our small groups. I truly enjoyed my conversation with Becky, Jonah and Peter and gained insight into how the past year has impacted them. I hope that you all had meaningful conversations with your small groups as well.

We are beginning the process of engaging in the reflection with our students this week. Here is a link to the slideshow from our staff meeting should you need the questions (slide 3 has the guiding questions for this week). These questions are intended to support your work with your TA groups and you are encouraged to adapt your process to meet your students’ needs.

I had the good fortune of crossing paths with Alex today and he shared the very creative strategy he has developed with his group. Here is the  link to the document he shared with me. Check it out if you want to see another model of how to support this reflection process!

The dates for the conferences are May 25 and 27th. As we did in November, please send a letter (by email unless the family does not have access to digital communication) to your TA students’ parents/caregivers by May 7th to schedule a time to meet. This letter has been created to facilitate the scheduling process. Feel free to personalize it. Please create a google doc (sample doc if you would like to copy) for parents/caregivers to sign up for a meeting time with you. If a family does not sign up by May 14th please follow up with an email or phone call to insure that a time is scheduled for all of your students.

Timeline:

Week of May 3-7

Email or mail letters home

Week of May 10-14

Monitor sign ups

Week of May 17-21

Follow up with any families who have not scheduled their conference

May 25 and 27th

Student led conferences

And now...Questions of the Week:

  1. If you became invisible for 10 minutes what (school appropriate) things would you do?

  2. What invention would you uninvent and why?

  3. What 5 things would you take with you on a zombie apocalypse and why?

  4. What thoughts or activities instantly make you feel more relaxed?

  5. What is something you dislike but really have no reason for disliking it?

Q3 JumpRope Reminders updates

As we wrap up Q3 this week, here is the JumpRope slideshow with instructions/checks to make sure that course scores are finalized and comments have been updated.

Please read through the entire slideshow carefully and, as always, be in touch with any questions.

Reminders:

- Q3 ends today

- All updates must be completed by Thursday, April 15 at 4:00 pm. This includes delivering a printed copy of Q3 scores for each class to Susan even if you are teaching a semester-long course.

- DO NOT enter any scores for new assessments (those with a due date after 4/9) in JumpRope until we have notified you (by email) that progress reports have been sent.  In other words, don't start entering anything for Q4 yet!!

If you teach a quarter-long class, it may also be worth reminding your students not to leave your Google Classroom too quickly.  You may need access to some of their work while finalizing scores.

Thanks everyone!

Q4 lunch schedule

There are only a few adjustments for Q4 lunches based on a change in quarter classes.  This begins on Monday, April 12.  Make sure you click to the Quarter 4 tab on this spreadsheet.

Please note that there may be additional room changes / updates when changes to student days onsite are made.

Student Support Team Update

The Team: Bernadette, John, Eric, Melody, Laurie, Meg, Duane

  • Highlights from The Week:

**Middle and High Students were especially proactive this week and were reaching out to our student support team members when they are struggling with social interactions, difficulty with class, or needing support. SST’s Philosophy is that we provide a proactive, restorative, comprehensive student centered approach, to provide social, emotional, and behavioral needs of all students 7-12.

**A middle school student identified strategies for starting their day more positively so that they would be more engaged in class throughout the day. They asked to use those strategies before/during TA (also inviting peers) - and this resulted in a great start to the day!

  • Attendance

We continue to hold CSP  (Coordinated Service Plan) meetings once a student hits 10UX, and are regularly scheduling new ones. Teacher Advisors are vital members of a students team, and you will be receiving invitations for these meetings. We recognize your time is limited and it may not be possible to attend. As such, we are constantly working to improve our feedback and communication to TA leaders and educational teams following these meetings. Please, don’t hesitate to reach out to Melody if you have any questions. This process continues to be one in which we support students and families to get connected to the resources necessary to improve health, wellbeing, and access to education. Your vigilance around daily attendance has allowed us to monitor and connect with these students and families. Thank you!!

  • Behavior Referrals:

This week: HS - One (1) PowerSchool log entries; MS - Zero (0) .

We will be providing a narrative update of the year to date log entries that specifically focus on behavior in the coming weeks.

Bernadette - 8th, 9th, 10th

John - 7th, 11th, 12th, HCLC

Tech Updates

The IT techs need to take a physical inventory of all students devices by getting the barcode on the bottom of their devices. We have a list of the students in each TA and will be stopping by to confirm it with the students.

It will be a s easy as asking Billy - what does your barcode say?

This will be a 5 minute or less process but is a necessary one.

Thank you for your cooperation with this task.

Taggert and Justin
